DIKO: GSI is a National Necessity - We Didn't Give the Government a Blank Check

The President of DIKO, Nikolas Papadopoulos, expressed strong concern about the delays and uncertainty surrounding the Cyprus-Greece electrical interconnection project. He emphasized that the timelines are constantly changing, with completion being postponed beyond 2030. At the same time, he mentioned that a criminal investigation by the European Public Prosecutor's Office is underway regarding the management of European funds for the project. Mr. Papadopoulos warned of the economic, environmental, and geopolitical consequences in the event of the project's collapse, emphasizing that Cyprus will miss the opportunity for cheaper electricity and its energy independence will be jeopardized, while opening the way for Turkey to play a central role in the region's energy interconnection. Cyprus could also face legal claims in the event of the project's cancellation.
