EAC Addresses Concerns Regarding Power Supply, Renewable Energy, and Dekelia

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) held a press conference to address concerns regarding power supply adequacy, costs, Renewable Energy Sources (RES), network resilience, and infrastructure modernization. EAC Chairman George Petrou emphasized that increasing demand and environmental restrictions on older generation units pose challenges. The EAC is responding with maintenance of existing units and investments in RES and storage. Specifically regarding the Dekelia Power Station, Mr. Petrou stated that it is undergoing upgrades and gradual replacement. Although the cost of new gas turbine units has increased, maintaining Dekelia is essential for supply security and enhancing RES penetration. This project is considered strategically important for national energy infrastructure. Regarding photovoltaic parks, the EAC clarified that obtaining a construction permit does not guarantee immediate implementation. The Authority has secured permits, but implementation depends on various factors. The EAC actively promotes the development of RES projects, alongside the upgrading of existing infrastructure. Overall, the EAC is committed to responsible planning and investments that will ensure the adequacy, reliability, and sustainability of Cyprus's electricity system, taking into account the challenges of the energy transition and environmental requirements.
