Election Service: Final Stretch for Voter Registration

The Election Service is in the final stretch for closing the voter registry on April 2nd. The Head of the Service, Menelaos Vasiliou, stated that this is the last time the registration process will take place, as from the next elections (Presidential 2028) registration will be automatic. To vote in the May parliamentary elections, one must be registered on the voter registry by April 2nd. All Cypriots over 18 years of age, who reach this age by the election date, are eligible to register. Those up to 25 years old can apply online, while those over 25 require an interview with the District Officers to prove their permanent residence in Cyprus for the last 6 months. The Ministry of Interior has sent letters to approximately 13,500 people who turned 18 since the last elections, informing them about the registration process. Simultaneously, awareness campaigns are being conducted to encourage registration and participation in the elections, as well as to ensure accessibility to polling stations for people with disabilities. According to the Election Service, approximately 160,000 Cypriots over 18 years of age have not been registered on the voter registry, but the exact number of eligible registrants, taking into account the requirement of permanent residence, is unknown.
