End to 'Pro-Russianism' – Multiple Messages Sent by Zelensky's First Visit to Cyprus

The visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Cyprus, at the invitation of President Christodoulides, marks a clear departure from the 'pro-Russianism' that Cyprus has been criticized for in the past. This move aims to reassure Cyprus' European partners of its support for the European agenda for Ukraine. Zelensky's visit to Cyprus is his first to the island, while Christodoulides visited Kyiv a month earlier. During the meeting, President Christodoulides assured Zelensky that Cyprus will support Ukraine during its Presidency of the Council of the EU, while Zelensky thanked Cyprus for the humanitarian aid it has provided. Zelensky also invited Archbishop Georgios to visit Kyiv, which is considered an important message to Moscow. The visit of Zelensky and his meetings with President Christodoulides and Archbishop Georgios underscore Cyprus' commitment to supporting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, as well as efforts to promote peace in the region. The two Presidents agreed that Cyprus will prioritize the opening of negotiating chapters for Ukraine and Moldova during its Presidency of the Council of the EU. This visit marks a new phase in Cyprus-Ukraine relations and the strengthening of their cooperation at the European level.
