EU Leaders Divided Over Energy Crisis and Geopolitical Challenges

The EU Summit in Brussels is taking place amidst significant challenges, with the energy crisis, developments in the Middle East, navigation safety, and Hungary's veto on Ukraine support dominating the agenda. Leaders are divided on how to address energy prices, with some countries, like Greece, calling for more decisive interventions, while others warn of potential market distortions. Furthermore, there is disagreement regarding the Emissions Trading System (ETS), with some countries considering it burdensome for competitiveness and others defending it as a tool for green transition. The Commission President supports its retention but leaves open the possibility of interventions to stabilize prices. At the same time, the EU is called upon to ensure freedom of navigation while avoiding military involvement, and to manage the crisis diplomatically. Hungary's veto on providing a loan to Ukraine highlights internal disagreements and the difficulties in reaching consensus. Greece prioritizes addressing energy prices, ensuring navigation safety, and strengthening security in the Eastern Mediterranean. The summit's conclusions are initially considered satisfactory for Greece, as they include references to these issues, however, expectations remain cautious.
