EU-Mercosur Deal Faces Crucial Vote as France Objects, Italy Holds the Key

The EU-Mercosur agreement is at a critical juncture, as the Permanent Representatives of the EU member states will vote today for final ratification before its signing on January 12th. France has already announced it will vote against, considering the agreement outdated and with minimal economic benefit, while also exposing the agricultural sector to unfair competition. Although France secured some improvements in the negotiations, such as a safeguard clause and the application of the principle of reciprocity, its political consensus remains negative. Italy holds the key to forming a majority, as its position remains uncertain. Other member states have already expressed their stance, with Austria expected to vote against and Belgium to abstain. To be approved, the agreement requires at least 15 countries representing 65% of the EU population.
