EU to Impose Charge on Shein and Temu Packages

Published December 31, 2025, 15:25

The EU has decided to impose a 3 euro charge per product on purchases from online platforms in third countries, such as Shein and Temu, starting this summer. The President of the Cypriot Consumer Association, Marios Drousiotis, stated that this decision is detrimental to consumers, despite the opposition of European consumer associations. The fee will be paid at the time of purchase, regardless of the product's value, even if it is only 1 euro. Therefore, a package with 5 products will be charged 15 euros. The Consumer Association estimates that the platforms will absorb the tax cost to avoid bureaucracy and administrative costs for customs authorities, and will accordingly increase product prices.
