European Budget Needs to Prioritize Gender Equality – What We Need to Demand as a Society
Dr. Christina Kaili and Mary Pyrgou expressed strong concerns regarding the new Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) of the European Union (2028-2034) and its impact on gender equality. Kaili emphasized that gender equality is not a central objective of the MFF, while Pyrgou stated that a large portion of the budget will be allocated to defense and security, at the expense of health, education, and welfare. They also questioned the allocation of funds for the safety of women and children, as well as the willingness of the European Parliament to vote on measures for equality. The official of the Commissioner for Gender Equality, Niobi Georgiadi, stressed the importance of ensuring that gender equality remains a priority in the allocation of resources and in the integration of the gender perspective into the European Budget. The discussion took place in Nicosia and was coordinated by Miranda Stylianaki. Kaili warned that gender equality is undermined not only by budget cuts but also by its absence from budgets and the loss of its political priority. She emphasized the need for specific goals, indicators, and accountability. In parallel, an international conference on gender budgeting was held at the University of Cyprus, under the auspices of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of Europe. The discussion highlighted the need for a more substantial and effective approach to integrating gender equality into the European Budget.
