European Council: Coordinated Response to Global Challenges

EU leaders are meeting in Brussels at the European Council to discuss the crisis in the Middle East, the war in Ukraine, and rising energy prices. The goal is to find a coordinated response to the negative impacts of these crises. The agenda also includes the EU's strategic competitiveness, the next multiannual financial framework, security and migration. Ukraine will be the first topic, with a video conference with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and support for Kyiv is expected to be reaffirmed. A significant issue is the €90 billion loan to Ukraine, which is being blocked by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, until the flow of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline is restored. The EU is offering technical and financial support to restore the pipeline, but the final decision remains with Orbán. The military escalation in the Middle East and its impact on Europe are also a major topic, with emphasis on the need for de-escalation and respect for international law. Leaders will also discuss the situation in Lebanon, Gaza and the West Bank, in the presence of UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
