Farmers React to EU-Mercosur Deal - Discussion in Agriculture Committee

The recent approval of the EU-Mercosur agreement is causing strong reactions in Cyprus, particularly from the agricultural sector. Agricultural organizations and the President of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture express concerns about unfair competition, food safety, and environmental impacts. They point out that European producers are subject to stricter regulations than producers from Mercosur countries, which increases their production costs by 20-30%. The President of Panagrotikos, Kyriakos Kailas, describes the agreement as disastrous, arguing that even small quantities of imported products at lower prices can severely damage domestic production. He also questions the EU's sincerity regarding the protection of European producers, considering the quotas as inadequate. There is disagreement on how to address the difference in regulations. Mr. Kailas suggests either banning imports of products that do not meet European standards or lifting restrictions on European producers, while acknowledging the risks to public health from the latter option. He emphasizes that Europe is investing in sustainable agriculture, which increases costs but also quality. In addition to the Mercosur agreement, Cypriot farmers face other difficulties, such as drought, problems with chalitika (land tenure issues), subleasing of Turkish Cypriot land, and difficulties with retirement. The Secretary-General of the Union of Cypriot Farmers (EKA), Panikos Champa, agrees with the concerns about food safety and unfair competition, highlighting the risks from pesticides and substances prohibited in the EU.
