Fatal Avalanches in the Italian Alps: Two Dead, Rescue Efforts Hampered

Two people have died and several others were injured after avalanches struck the Italian Alps on Friday. One avalanche hit the southwestern valley of Maira in Piedmont, resulting in one fatality and two injuries, one of whom is in critical condition. A second avalanche near Pragelato, a popular ski resort, trapped a woman who was freed but injured. Strong winds are hindering rescue operations, preventing helicopters from reaching those stranded. Authorities are also monitoring reports of a third avalanche in Piedmont. Separately, in northeastern Italy, in the Lesser Dolomites, a 50-year-old skier was killed in an avalanche. Rescuers were unable to save him despite an immediate response.
