Fierce clashes are ongoing in Aleppo, Syria, between Syrian government forces and Kurdish fighters. The Syrian army announced the capture of the Sheikh Maqsood neighborhood, which was denied by the Kurds, who state they continue to resist. Videos circulating show civilians attempting to flee the area amidst the fighting. These clashes have resulted in the displacement of tens of thousands of civilians, with the UN estimating that at least 30,000 families have been forced to leave their homes. Simultaneously, negotiations are underway to integrate Kurdish institutions into the new Syrian state, as per an agreement reached in March. The capture of Sheikh Maqsood would end Kurdish control over parts of Aleppo that Kurdish forces have held since 2011.
