Foot-and-Mouth Disease: “We Will Have a Problem with Halloumi” – Farmers Accused of Spreading the Virus During Protest

The spread of foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus is taking on dramatic proportions, with the risk of impacting halloumi production. New cases have been detected in Dali and Geri, with the transmission originating from previous movements of infected animals. Approximately 15,000 animals have already been culled, and another 15,000 are expected to be culled. The situation is due to the refusal of some farmers to comply with the culls deemed necessary to limit the epidemic. Farmers who participated in protests have been reported for spreading the virus. Veterinary Services warn that they will enter farms even without consent and that those who do not comply will lose state support. Four veterinarians from Slovakia have been sent to help manage the crisis.
