Former Bishop Tychikos Suspended by Holy Synod

The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus has decided to impose a suspension 'until further notice' on former Metropolitan Tychikos, effectively removing him from the Hierarchy. This decision is due to Tychikos's contentious attitude towards the Synod's decisions and the guidance of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, despite his initial attempt to appear compliant with a 'confession of faith' letter deemed insufficient. The imposition of the suspension marks an escalation in the dispute between Tychikos and the Synod, which is unfolding during a period of discussions about significant changes in the way Metropolitans are elected. The Archbishop's proposal envisages the direct election of Metropolitans by the Synod, bypassing the participation of the people. Tychikos had expressed his intention to appeal to the civil courts, however, church circles believe that this appeal is unfounded, as previous decisions of the Supreme Court have defined the autonomy of the Church of Cyprus. His stance is considered disobedience and his attempt to return to the Metropolis of Paphos has been rejected. This case highlights the internal tensions and decision-making processes within the Church of Cyprus, as well as the legal challenges facing the religious organization in relation to its autonomy and the exercise of its power.
