From Pubs to Souvlaki Shops: How 'Protection' Groups Operated in Larnaca

A bloody incident in Larnaca, involving shootings and the use of other weapons, revealed the operation of criminal networks allegedly controlling the illegal 'protection' market for businesses. These groups demand money from shops, such as pubs, souvlaki shops, and kiosks, through threats and extortion. The Police are investigating the case and have received complaints from business owners who claim to live in a climate of fear. According to the complaints, the groups demand monthly sums, such as €7,000 or €1,000, for providing 'protection'. A 48-year-old man is considered the alleged leader of the group and is hospitalized under guard. Police estimate that the group is paid €80 per night for each private guard placed in stores, of which €30 is for providing 'protection'. The case has sparked strong public outrage and has led to public appeals to the Police to go to the end and combat organized crime.
