German Foreign Minister Downplays Risk of US Attack on Greenland

German Foreign Minister Johann Wandel has downplayed the risk of a US attack on Greenland, despite previous threats from Donald Trump to “acquire” the territory. Wandel stated that he has no indication that the US government is seriously considering such a move, while also emphasizing the common desire to address security issues in the Arctic. NATO is in the process of developing more robust plans for Arctic security, which will be discussed with the United States. Wandel's visit to Washington precedes a meeting between Marco Rubio and officials from Denmark and Greenland. Trump reiterated on Sunday his intention to acquire Greenland, considering it strategically important for US security against China and Russia, and accusing Denmark of neglecting the region. The potential annexation of Greenland would mark the “end” of NATO, according to Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. Greenland has significant mineral resources and its location is strategically important. The US already has a military base in the area. On Friday and Saturday, a delegation from the US Congress will visit Copenhagen to discuss strengthening security in the Arctic and trade relations.
