Greenhouse Gas Levels at Record Highs in Cyprus

According to the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, Antonia Theodosiou, greenhouse gas concentrations in Cyprus have reached record levels. The main cause is electricity production and transport, according to scientific findings from the Centre of Excellence for Climate and Atmospheric Research of the Cyprus Institute. At the same time, a 5.2% reduction in emissions was recorded according to Eurostat, however the Commissioner stressed that this is not enough and efforts need to be strengthened to transition to a sustainable energy model. Environmental pressure in Cyprus is significant and also concerns the issue of water, with drought now being a reality. Theodosiou mentioned that land desertification is also a serious problem, emphasizing the need for an integrated approach to natural resource management. She highlighted the importance of the Troodos Geopark, which is a valuable natural and geological treasure for Cyprus. Finally, the Commissioner referred to the need to transition to climate neutrality, with the development of Renewable Energy Sources and energy communities being key tools to achieve this goal.
