Güler: Turkey is an indispensable factor for NATO and European security

Turkish Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler emphasized the critical role of Turkey in European security architecture in an interview, stating that Ankara is an irreplaceable factor for the stability of NATO and Europe. He highlighted that the Alliance continues to operate on the basis of collective defense and common commitments, and that differences can be resolved through NATO's dialogue mechanisms. He also noted that the US is asking its European allies to take on more responsibility for the continent's security. Regarding Greek-Turkish relations and disputes in the Aegean, Güler reiterated Ankara's position, stating that Turkey will not accept unilateral moves that, in Turkey's view, would restrict its access to the open sea and international airspace. He also clarified that there are no changes to the rules of engagement for 2026. The minister highlighted the operational capabilities of the Turkish armed forces, emphasizing that the Turkish navy can operate in a wide geographical area. He also pointed out Turkey's investments in new military technologies and its focus on areas such as cyberspace and space, beyond the traditional "Blue Homeland". Overall, Güler presented Turkey as an indispensable factor for security in the region, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the Alliance and addressing challenges through dialogue and strengthening military capabilities.
