Health Minister Announces Meeting to Address Nursing Shortage

The Minister of Health, Neofytos Charalambides, announced that a meeting will be held in one month to evaluate proposals regarding the problem of nursing shortages in Cyprus. The meeting will involve stakeholders, with the aim of finding immediate and mutually acceptable solutions. The Minister visited Limassol Hospital to examine interventions concerning the daily lives of patients and staff. His goal is to implement small-scale improvements in various departments of the hospital by the first quarter of 2026. Mr. Charalambides acknowledged that the nursing shortage is a global problem, but stressed that measures have been taken in the last three years that have led to an 85% increase in the number of nursing students. However, he believes that the incentives for the profession are not yet sufficient. In addition, he referred to major projects to upgrade and expand Limassol Hospital, with a total cost of over 23 million euros, which include the upgrade of the A&E department, the creation of new units, and the decongestion of the hospital.
