Historic Medical Evacuation from ISS – Four Astronauts Return to Earth

NASA conducted the first-ever medical evacuation from the International Space Station (ISS), returning four astronauts to Earth aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule. The capsule landed safely in the Pacific Ocean, near San Diego. The return of the astronauts, including members from NASA, Japan, and Russia, occurred approximately 10.5 hours after undocking from the ISS, due to a medical issue that arose with one of the crew members. The astronaut's identity and the nature of the problem have not been disclosed for privacy reasons. The Crew-11 mission was originally scheduled to last another month, but the decision was made for an early return to ensure the astronaut's health. NASA assures that the understaffing of the ISS does not create operational risk, as the launch of the Crew-12 mission is expected soon. According to NASA, although statistically such a medical evacuation was expected approximately once every three years, the delay in its occurrence is remarkable. The head of NASA's medical services emphasized that the return was not an emergency, but the ISS does not have the means for a complete diagnosis and treatment.
