Holy Synod to Hold Emergency Meeting Regarding Tychikos and Avvakoum Monastery

The Holy Synod of Cyprus will convene in an emergency session today to discuss the issue of Bishop Tychikos, as well as allegations regarding monks who resided at the Avvakoum Monastery. The Archbishop of Cyprus, George, described Tychikos' appeal to civil courts as a serious development, outside the practice of the Church, and as an act of disobedience. The Synod is expected to consider proposals for changes to the Church's Charter, including the election process for Bishops and Metropolitans, so that they are elected exclusively by the Synod itself. In addition, allegations that the monks of Avvakoum Monastery are performing religious duties despite being defrocked will be examined.
