Hour of Crisis for Tychikos: Holy Synod Convenes in Emergency Session

The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus is convening in an emergency session today to discuss the future of former Metropolitan Tychikos, who has resorted to legal action. Archbishop Georgios expressed concern about this move, as it is considered outside of church practice. He is expected to be given an indefinite suspension. In addition, Archbishop's proposal to change the way Bishops and Metropolitans are elected will be discussed, so that the decision is made exclusively by the Holy Synod, with limited public participation in the election of an Archbishop. Finally, the issuance of a statement calling on the faithful to abstain from religious ceremonies performed by defrocked monks will be considered.
