“I Felt the Cockroaches on My Body”: The Helicoide Torture Prison in Venezuela

The Helicoide, a futuristic shopping center designed in the 1950s in Caracas, Venezuela, has become a symbol of repression under the Maduro regime. According to the UN, political prisoners were systematically tortured within the building. Following efforts to release some prisoners as a gesture of appeasement towards the US, testimonies reveal the atrocities suffered by those imprisoned, including chains, beatings, and psychological violence. Among the prisoners were journalists, union leaders, and politicians, many of whom remain there. The building, once an architectural dream, remained unfinished and abandoned after the fall of the dictatorship, turning into a “living ruin.”
