Immunity Lifted for Cyprus MP Marinou Sizopoulos

The Supreme Court decided to lift the immunity of MP and former EDEK president, Marinos Sizopoulos, following a request from the Legal Service. The decision concerns a case arising from a complaint by the Independent Authority Against Corruption regarding the company Taxan and involves offenses such as fraud, forgery, and conspiracy to defraud. The court ruled that there was no political-partisan motive behind the request to lift immunity. According to the findings of the Anti-Corruption Authority, shareholders of Taxan sold their shares to an Iraqi investor for a higher amount than declared, in order to settle a debt to a bank. The difference in the sale price was allegedly not disclosed to the bank. Mr. Sizopoulos stated that the decision leads to a reinvestigation of a case he had reported himself in 2019 and had been archived. He expressed hope that the new investigation would be impartial and that responsibilities would be assigned where they belong.
