Increase in Amateur Candle Production in Cyprus – Department Warns of Risks

The Department of Labour Inspection (DLI) is warning about the risks associated with the increasing amateur production of scented candles and room fragrance products. The production of these products, often in spaces without adequate ventilation and safety conditions, can endanger consumer health and the environment. These products contain chemical mixtures that can cause irritation, respiratory problems and other health effects. The DLI emphasizes that labeling a product as “natural” does not guarantee its safety and that proper labeling and packaging are essential. Producers and importers are required to comply with European Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation) and provide information about the potential risks of their products. The communication of information about the composition of hazardous products to the European Database of Poison Centers and the use of the UFI code are also mandatory. The DLI stresses that amateur production does not exempt anyone from legal obligations and calls on consumers to prefer products with clear and complete labeling, to read the instructions for use carefully and to avoid products of unknown origin. Responsible production, documented risk assessment and proper labeling are essential to protect public health and the environment.
