Independent Criminal Investigator Appointed for Controversial Video

Published January 14, 2026, 12:30

The Attorney General of Cyprus has appointed an independent criminal investigator, Andreas Paschalidis, to investigate a video posted on the 'X' platform by the account 'Emily Thompson' on January 8, 2026. The appointment was deemed necessary due to a conflict of interest, as the Presidential Palace is implicated in the case. The investigation will be conducted in cooperation with the Police and will examine the authenticity, origin, circumstances, and motives behind the video's publication, as well as whether the video has been edited. Claims have emerged that the video was published at a critical time for the Republic of Cyprus, with the aim of damaging its credibility. Legal expert Christos Clerides emphasized the seriousness of the case and the correctness of appointing an independent investigator, due to the involvement of high-ranking officials and the political dimension of the issue.
