Interior Ministry: Affordable Housing Through Increased Supply and Faster Approvals

Minister of Interior Konstantinos Ioannou emphasized the need for coordinated housing policy at national and European levels, speaking at a conference on affordable housing. Housing is a basic prerequisite for social cohesion, security, and decent living, impacting family, work, and social participation. The Minister mentioned the increasing pressure on the housing market due to rising prices and limited supply, which affects a wide range of society, especially young people, families, and workers in critical sectors. The European Commission has identified affordable housing as a strategic priority. The Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU places the issue of housing high on the European agenda, focusing on access to affordable and sustainable housing, facilitating investment, and increasing supply. The goal is to exchange knowledge and data between member states. The Cypriot government has prioritized housing policy, with two pillars: increasing housing stock and strengthening the purchasing power of citizens. Urban Incentive Plans and Build to Rent are being promoted, with 46 applications already submitted to take advantage of the incentives, corresponding to more than 2,500 housing units, of which 400 are for affordable housing.
