Iran Considers Levying Fees on Ships Passing Through Strait of Hormuz

Iran is considering imposing transit fees on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a move that could economically exploit its control over the critical sea route. Since the start of US-Israeli strikes, Tehran has effectively closed the Strait to ships linked to the US, Israel, or their allies. A parliamentarian stated that the parliament is working on a plan that would require countries to pay fees to the Islamic Republic for safe passage through the Strait. Iran's interim president, Mohammad Mohber, stated that Tehran could impose sanctions on the West by blocking the passage of its ships. The speaker of the Iranian parliament noted that traffic in the Strait will not return to its pre-war state. Iran has allowed the passage of some ships from countries it considers allied, but has warned that it will block the passage of ships from hostile countries.
