Iran Destroys US Awacs Aircraft Worth $300 Million in Saudi Arabia
An Iranian missile struck an airbase in Saudi Arabia, damaging military aircraft and destroying a US E-3 Sentry airborne early warning and control aircraft, valued at $300 million. This is the first confirmed loss of this type of aircraft for the US. The E-3 Sentry, also known as AWACS, is used to detect distant threats and guide other fighter aircraft. Its destruction, although the US has more than 60 such aircraft, is particularly costly due to its operational importance. Experts point out that large aircraft are vulnerable when on the ground and require active defense. The US Central Command has not yet commented on the loss of the aircraft. However, so far the US has not lost any manned aircraft to enemy fire in the air during the campaign against Iran, although more than twelve MQ-9 Reaper drones have been shot down. This incident marks an escalation of tensions in the region, as Iran has previously caused damage to other US aircraft on the ground. The destruction of the E-3 Sentry highlights the need to strengthen the defense of airbases and the increasing vulnerability of military assets in the region.
