Kontidis Returns to Action
Pavlos Kontidis begins his 2026 sailing season in Palma de Mallorca, despite a recent back injury. Participating in the 55th Trofeo Princesa Sofia, the Cypriot athlete aims for the best possible start, having achieved a fourth-place finish in 2023 and a ninth-place finish last year in the same event. Palma is the first of five Grand Slam events for 2026, with stops in Jersey, the Netherlands, Kiel, and Long Beach. Around 1,100 sailors from 62 countries are expected to participate in the event, with most competing in the ILCA 7 class, where Kontidis will compete alongside Emilios Poeros. Additionally, Cyprus will be represented by Natasha Lappa and Marilena Makri in the women's categories, in IQFOIL and ILCA 6 respectively. Kontidis is supported by Freedom24 as Super Grand Sponsor and Allwyn as a major sponsor, with significant contributions from Ayia Napa Marina, the Leventis Foundation, and Petrolina. Additionally, Alassia NewShips Management, the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation, VITA Group, and Hartmann Holdings LTD are supporters. Prior to the competition, Kontidis participated in a demonstration race, finishing fourth, demonstrating gradual improvement and preparation for the official events. His return to action, despite the injury, is a significant event for Cypriot sailing.
