Larnaca Port and Marina: Chamber of Commerce Proposal Prioritizes Development and Land Expansion

The Larnaca Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EVEL) has released its proposal for the development of the Larnaca port and marina, supporting the Ministry of Transport's proposals for management by the Cyprus Ports Authority, based on a study by the Hellenic Fund. However, EVEL insists on the parallel development of the land area, which was not included in the initial proposals, causing reactions. This development is considered strategically important for the sustainable development of Larnaca and the strengthening of Cyprus's position in the shipping and maritime tourism sector. The main objectives of the proposed development include upgrading port infrastructure, creating a modern passenger and tourist terminal, developing commercial and tourist activities, enhancing tourism attractiveness, attracting investment, creating jobs, and functionally connecting the port area with the city. Specifically, EVEL proposes the expansion of the north quay, increasing the turning circle radius to accommodate larger ships, and utilizing the west pier with the creation of a new quay to serve additional commercial vessels. This utilization is deemed necessary to ensure the uninterrupted continuation of port activities during the upgrade works. Furthermore, the study by the Hellenic Fund mentions the need to increase the depth of the port. EVEL believes that the second development option, as it emerges from the study, is the most appropriate, provided that future expansion of the port infrastructure is ensured in case of increased activity.
