Mayors Aim to Reunite Nicosia Through River Park Project

The mayors of Nicosia, Charalambos Prountzos and Mehmet Harmanji, toured the Pedieos River to inspect the construction of a 15-kilometer Linear Park. This park will connect the northern and southern parts of the city, providing a route for pedestrians and cyclists. Mr. Harmanji described the day as historic, emphasizing that the river will unite the city, just as their predecessors united it from below. The project is funded by the European Union and supervised by UNDP. The first phase, 1.2 kilometers long, connecting the Ledra Palace checkpoint with the Pedieos River, is expected to be completed in March at a cost of €460,000. The second phase includes 2,850 meters of path with elevated walkways and bridges, as well as the creation of three recreation areas. Due to the need to protect local flora and fauna, the works will be carried out with respect for breeding seasons, which will increase the completion time of this phase to one and a half years. The project aims to restore natural habitats, create public spaces, and strengthen community ties. In addition, it will provide flood protection and erosion control, and is expected to attract approximately 250,000 visitors annually.
