Measures Taken by Civil Defense After Akrotiri Alert

The Cyprus Civil Defense Force has taken all necessary measures following the alert triggered by the incident at the Akrotiri British Base. The Commander of the Force, Maria Papa, stated that the Civil Defense received information from the National Guard and then contacted the British Bases through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Despite initial information that there was no danger to citizens, the Civil Defense proactively informed local authorities and citizens, offering accommodation at the Youth Energy Center (KEN) in Limassol to those who wished to relocate. The KEN mechanism was activated to ensure the safe accommodation of citizens. Teams from the Civil Defense Force remain in the Akrotiri area to provide assistance to those in need. Contact was also made with the Red Cross for possible transport of people with disabilities and vulnerable groups. The Commander Papa informed that there are approximately 2,500 shelters throughout Cyprus, covering about 40-45% of the population. Citizens can find information about the nearest shelter through the “SafeCY” application.
