Ministry of Welfare: Misinformation Regarding the Discontinuation of Allowance for Blind Individuals

The Ministry of Welfare responds to reports regarding the discontinuation of allowance for blind individuals, assuring that this is misinformation. The allowance continues smoothly, without interruption, for both existing beneficiaries and new applicants, whose applications are being processed as usual. Specifically, 1,995 beneficiaries receive the allowance of €382 per month, with a total annual expenditure of €9.3 million. Since September, 88 new beneficiaries have been approved, and 120 pending applications are currently under review. The Ministry expresses regret for the spread of misinformation, which, according to the Ministry, originates from the Pan-Cypriot Organization of the Blind. It points out that the bill on social participation and independent living of people with disabilities maintains the definition of a blind person and the allowance as it currently exists. Contrary to the claims, the Ministry assures that the allowance is not being abolished or reduced, and after the passage of the bill, the Council of Ministers will have the ability to increase the allowance and other benefits for people with disabilities, as well as to expand personal assistance and home care services.
