Misinformation Regarding 'Discontinuation' of Blind Allowance, Says Deputy Ministry

The Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare issued a statement regarding the Blind Allowance, denying information about its "discontinuation". The Deputy Ministry assures that the allowance of €382 per month continues smoothly, without interruption, for both existing beneficiaries and new applicants. To date, 1,995 beneficiaries receive the allowance, with an annual expenditure of €9.3 million. Since September, 88 new beneficiaries have been approved, and 120 applications are currently being examined. The Deputy Ministry expresses regret for the spread of misinformation, which it states originates from the Pan Cypriot Organization of the Blind. It points out that the bill under consideration in Parliament does not abolish or reduce the allowance, but instead provides for the possibility of increasing it in the future, as well as expanding benefits for people with disabilities. The Deputy Ministry assures all people with disabilities that it remains committed to improving benefits and their well-being. It emphasizes that the bill safeguards all rights of the blind and people with disabilities enshrined in other legislation.
