MPs Criticize Welfare Ministry for Lack of Communication with Citizens

An emergency session of the Parliamentary Labor Committee began with strong criticism from MPs towards the Ministry of Welfare. MPs reported that citizens are forced to turn to them to find out the status of their applications, as the Ministry does not respond to inquiries and a circular prohibits communication with MPs. They described the situation as “psychologically damaging” and stressed that it is not the MP's job to act as an intermediary. The Deputy Minister, Klea Papaellina, admitted the existence of a circular prohibiting MPs from entering the Benefit Management Service, but denied a ban on communication with officials and directors. However, MPs persisted in their complaints, citing the Ministry's Director-General. The committee chairman, Andreas Kavkalias, stated that citizens are forced to turn to MPs because they do not receive answers from the Ministry, while MP Dimitris Dimitriou described the situation as “unhealthy”. MP Alexandra Attalidou emphasized that it is not the MP's job to mediate for answers to vulnerable groups. Ms. Papaellina pledged to clarify the issue and find a “correct way of communication”, assuring that communication with officials and directors of the Ministry is not prohibited. The case is expected to continue with further clarifications and efforts to resolve the communication problem between citizens, the Ministry and MPs.
