New EU Anti-Racism Strategy for 2026–2030 Presented by the Commission

The European Commission has presented the new EU Anti-Racism Strategy for the period 2026–2030, aiming for a Europe free from discrimination and with equal participation of all citizens in social and economic life. This strategy is a continuation of the 2020–2025 Action Plan and builds on the progress made, however, recent Eurobarometers show that racial discrimination remains a widespread problem for most European citizens. The new strategy focuses on three key pillars: the full implementation and stricter enforcement of European anti-discrimination legislation, removing barriers and promoting inclusion in education, employment, healthcare, and housing, and developing partnerships against racism at all levels of society. The Commission will evaluate the 2000 Racial Equality Directive and consider imposing stricter penalties. At the same time, the European framework for combating hate speech and hate crimes is being strengthened, with an emphasis on protecting victims and harmonizing definitions for online offenses, while respecting freedom of expression. Particular importance is given to supporting national equality bodies to ensure their independence and effectiveness. The strategy includes the launch of a pan-European equality campaign, as well as actions to improve access to employment, healthcare, education, and housing. In addition, funding for civil society organizations active in the field of combating discrimination will be increased. The strategy aims to address all forms of racism, including algorithmic discrimination from artificial intelligence tools.
