New Year's Reflection: A Call for Compassion and Rule of Law

Andromachi Sofocleous, in her New Year's article, analyzes the critical situation we are in, where fundamental values such as democracy and international law are being questioned. She highlights the growing economic and social inequality, the environmental crisis, and the revival of a warlike climate. The author emphasizes that 2026 will be a decisive year, as the decisions made will affect the next decades. She warns that continuing misanthropy and individual pursuit will not lead to improvement, but to a worsening of the situation. Sofocleous stresses the importance of compassion and humanity, even in difficult times. She refers to a discussion with students in Nicosia, where she urged them to use their access to information to cultivate the virtue of compassion. She concludes by arguing that strength lies in building bridges and creating a better society for all, based on the rule of law and not the jungle. Democracy and humanity can only flourish in an environment of security and prosperity.
