Nikolas Papadopoulos Opens Pandora's Box

The president of DIKO, Nikolas Papadopoulos, expressed strong concerns regarding the progress of the GSI project, characterizing it as strategically important for Cyprus. He emphasized that there are contradictions and resistance in the government's management of the project, with different officials expressing conflicting views. He warned that the abandonment or delay of the GSI would be a geopolitical defeat for Cyprus, even worse than the S-300 affair. DIPI responded to Nikolas Papadopoulos' statements, questioning DIKO's insistence on immediate commitment to a project without the necessary studies and data. The party called on the Minister of Energy to clarify whether he aligns with the government's positions or serves the party interests of DIKO. The DIPI minister, Marinos Mousiouttas, accused Nikolas Papadopoulos of "survival tactics" and argued that his ultimate goal is the dissolution of the remaining center parties. Nikolas Papadopoulos responded immediately, denying the accusations and challenging the President of the Republic to comment on Mousiouttas' characterizations. Nikolas Papadopoulos reiterated the importance of the GSI for Cyprus, emphasizing that it will provide cheap electricity and promote the trilateral cooperation between Cyprus, Greece, and Israel. He argued that the government must clarify its position on the project, as DIKO has already made its intentions clear.
