Parliament to Intervene in Police Working Hours

The Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs will discuss police working hours on January 21st, following a proposal by MPs from the DISY party. The discussion will include a presentation of the Police organizational chart and an examination of ways to strengthen the sense of security and the rule of law. The debate was triggered by the issuance of a circular by the Chief of Police regarding working hours, which has sparked reactions from police unions. The Cyprus Police Association (CPA) and the Equality Union have requested the issue be discussed by the Committee and are planning protests. The CPA has already met with DISY representatives and is seeking legal advice on the legality of the circular. The Equality Union describes the circular as an “executive administrative act” that undermines the rule of law and is considering legal action. Representatives from the Police, the Ministry of Justice, and the police unions will be invited to participate in the Committee meeting. The aim is to have a constructive dialogue and find solutions that satisfy all parties. Furthermore, the Secretary-General of the pan-European police trade union organization, EUROCOP, is expected to comment on the issue during his visit to Cyprus at the end of January, adding another dimension to the debate.
