Parliamentary Committee Discusses Amendment to Parliamentary Immunity Article

The Parliamentary Legal Committee discussed amending Article 83 of the Constitution regarding parliamentary immunity. The Committee President, Nikos Tornaritis, proposed that MPs convicted of offenses should not be protected by immunity. Aristos Damianou (AKEL) emphasized the need to protect MPs from arbitrariness, while Christiana Erotokritou (DIKO) argued that immunity should ensure the exercise of parliamentary duties without fear of prosecution, but should not be abused. The discussion focused on the need for a balance between protecting MPs and holding them accountable, as well as the appropriate procedure for lifting immunity.
