Parliamentary Committee Requests Written Answers on Disability Bill

The Parliamentary Committee on Labor discussed the bill for people with disabilities in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Klea Chatzistefanou Papaellina. Members of Parliament requested written answers to key issues, such as the number and inclusion of new beneficiaries who will be released from the Minimum Guaranteed Income, delays in appeals, and the need to strengthen services. The Committee Chairman, Andreas Kavkalias, emphasized the need for clear answers from the executive branch, as there are still substantial issues that require clarification. There was confusion regarding the exact number of new beneficiaries who will be included in services and benefits, with initial estimates suggesting 12,000 people. However, organizations express concern that inclusion will not be immediate for all those excluded due to income criteria. The Committee committed to exhausting the timeframes to advance the bill to the Plenary Session. The Deputy Minister of Social Welfare assured that the Deputy Ministry has studied the memoranda and proposals and will return with clarifications, aiming for a modern and fair support framework. She characterized the bill as a major social reform, emphasizing the importance of decoupling the disability allowance from the GMI. Political will was expressed for gradual increases in benefits and the inclusion of new beneficiaries, with planned funds of €106 million for the period 2026-2028. The discussion of the bill will continue next Tuesday, with the examination extending to the article-by-article stage.
