President of Cyprus Discusses Competitiveness, Middle East, and Energy at European Council

The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, expressed optimism regarding productive discussions on EU competitiveness during the European Council. He emphasized that the Summit aims for specific deliverables and substantial decisions. Regarding the Middle East, he highlighted the need for strong political messages from the EU, urging the Union to take initiatives for de-escalation and the termination of the war, responding to the expectations of the region's countries. Furthermore, President Christodoulides referred to the need for substantial support for Lebanon, which was incorporated into the Summit's Conclusions at Cyprus' initiative. He also focused on the discussion regarding the mutual assistance clause (Article 42(7)), emphasizing the value of European solidarity, as demonstrated by Cyprus' experience. The discussion on the mutual assistance clause will continue at the Informal European Council to be hosted in Cyprus on April 23 and 24. President Christodoulides discussed the issue with the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission. Finally, the President did not rule out the possibility of specific decisions being taken regarding the impact of the war on energy prices. Simultaneously, a discussion between European leaders and the United Nations Secretary-General is expected, aiming to issue a unified message in favor of resuming substantial negotiations on the Cyprus issue, based on international law.
