Putin's Oreshnik Strike: A Message to Europe and the US

Russia has launched an Oreshnik hypersonic missile, a move analysts interpret as an attempt to intimidate Ukraine and send a message of military strength to Europe and the US. The strike occurred amid critical talks to end the war, despite Moscow's claims that it was “retaliation” for a Ukrainian attack. Vladimir Putin has repeatedly emphasized the speed and destructive power of the Oreshnik, which was first used in Ukraine in November 2024. Its use now, after a period of inactivity, is considered significant. The attack came after a series of developments considered negative for Russia, such as the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by US special forces and the seizure of a Russian tanker by the US in the Atlantic. Also, Britain and France announced plans to deploy troops to Ukraine. Analysts estimate that Russia feels sidelined in diplomatic contacts and is particularly outraged by plans to deploy European troops. The use of the Oreshnik is seen as an attempt to remind the West of its military power and force Western partners to consider the Russian position in negotiations.
