Race Against Time for Kapodistrian University Schools – The Ball is in the Legal Service's Court

The transfer of the Polyfunctional Social Welfare and Employment Center (former community center) to the Kapodistrian University of Athens, for the creation of Psychology and Maritime schools in Larnaca, is at a standstill. Although the university plans to launch its study programs in the fall of 2026, the transfer of the building, which is located on state land, has not yet been completed. The Municipality of Larnaca has requested the declassification of the plot, as legislation does not allow the transfer of forest land to university institutions. The issue has been referred to the Legal Service, which will examine the legal aspects of the case and issue an opinion. The Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panagiotou, recognizes the importance of hosting the Kapodistrian University schools in Larnaca and states that her ministry is approaching the request positively. However, she points out that there are legal obstacles that need to be overcome. Larnaca MP, Andreas Apostolou, emphasizes that the use of the specific buildings is a one-way street and will address both the Legal Service and the Ministry of Agriculture to expedite the procedures. The delay in the transfer of the building jeopardizes the implementation of the project and the start of the study programs.
