Restaurant Transforms Food Waste into Marine Ecosystem Boost

A restaurant in Limassol, Puesta Oyster Bar and Grill, is implementing a pioneering waste management method by enriching the marine environment with food remnants. Instead of oyster shells ending up in landfills, they are used to create marine-friendly concrete. This concrete is used in the construction of 3D-printed artificial reefs, which function as “nature-based solutions.” The reefs enhance biodiversity, contribute to the restoration of marine ecosystems, and aid in the overall recovery of marine life. The initiative was highlighted by the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Cyprus Institute for the Sea and Navigation, who expressed their appreciation for the restaurant's contribution to the circular economy. Puesta received a Certificate of Appreciation for its leading role in protecting the marine environment. This method not only protects the environment but also contributes to the protection of coastal infrastructure, as the reefs act as natural barriers against erosion. The success of the initiative underscores the importance of collaboration between local businesses, science, and society to achieve common environmental goals.
