ReTour Initiative Launched to Support Mediterranean Tourism SMEs

The ReTour program, funded by the EU through Interreg NEXT MED, has begun implementation with the aim of strengthening the resilience of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Mediterranean tourism sector. The project has a total budget of €1.831.800, with the EU contributing 89% (€1.630.302). ReTour will focus on promoting innovation, cross-border cooperation, and skills development, providing SMEs with access to technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and blockchain, as well as sustainable development practices. The project will be implemented in six countries – Greece, Cyprus, Jordan, Italy, Turkey, and Lebanon – and will last 30 months. The consortium consists of nine partners and eight associated partners, ensuring a connection with the market and the tourism ecosystem. From Cyprus, the Research Foundation of the University of Nicosia and the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI) are participating. The main activities of ReTour include research and mapping of SME needs, the creation of an Innovation Hub (a digital platform for knowledge and networking), support for the adoption of new technologies, the development of customized implementation plans and pilot actions, as well as the enhancement of the resilience skills of human resources. The kick-off meeting of the project took place in Athens, at the facilities of the National Technical University of Athens, with the participation of all partners and agreement on the initial action plan. ReTour aims to contribute to addressing the challenges faced by tourism SMEs in the Mediterranean, such as crises, seasonality, climate change, and geopolitical developments.
