Rubio Directs US Diplomats to Pressure Countries for Action Against Iran

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has instructed American diplomats worldwide to urge foreign governments to take immediate action to limit Iran's and its allies' ability to attack other countries and citizens. The order was given amid an increased risk of attack from Iran and its “satellites,” and is part of a request for action due to increased concern over the activities of the Revolutionary Guards. Diplomats are asked to deliver the message at a high level by March 20, emphasizing that combined action is more effective than unilateral action. Rubio's directive highlights the need to end Iran's campaign of terror in the Middle East and globally, and mentions the goals of Operation Epic Fury, such as neutralizing Iran's nuclear program and disrupting the networks of its proxies. Diplomats are also called upon to coordinate their efforts with their Israeli counterparts and to remind of Iran's long-standing efforts to destabilize the region through its support for groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas. In addition, they are asked to encourage countries that have not designated the Revolutionary Guards and Hezbollah as terrorist organizations to do so immediately. Rubio's directive emphasizes that Iran is more sensitive to collective action and that joint pressure is more likely to bring about a change in behavior from the regime than unilateral actions.
