Strong Solar Storm Hits Earth: Impact and Visibility from Cyprus

Published January 20, 2026, 21:12

A strong solar storm, the largest in 20 years (category S4), has been impacting Earth since yesterday, causing disturbances in the magnetic field and affecting various technologies, including airplanes, telecommunications, electricity, satellites, and astronauts. Giorgos Danos, President of the Space Exploration Organization, stated that the storm reached Earth within 25 hours, compared to the usual 2-3 days. The phenomenon may be visible in Cyprus as the Northern Lights, but only through camera photos, as the human eye cannot perceive the faint colors. The storm does not affect the weather or climate. Furthermore, a protocol has been signed to protect the planet from such storms, using artificial intelligence to predict the phenomena early on.
