Students Return to Schools in Akrotiri, Preparedness Exercise Scheduled

Students in Akrotiri returned to their schools on Monday, following the lifting of the evacuation order. The Deputy Mayor of Akrotiri, George Constantinou, stated that daily routines have resumed and children are back at the Akrotiri elementary and kindergarten schools. Last week, the Minister of Education, Athena Michaelidou, visited the community and provided instructions for static and seismic safety checks of school buildings. The President of the Parents and Guardians Association, Paulina Argyrou, confirmed that all children have returned to their school after being hosted at the B' Kolossi Elementary School and there are no problems. The Minister's visit and the presence of relevant officials focused on the safety of children and addressing potential risks. A meeting was held on March 20th with the Minister and representatives from the Technical Services, the Office of Political Defense, Security and Health, inspectors, and the First Education Officer, to discuss safety issues. This followed the previous hosting of the children at the B' Kolossi Elementary School. A preparedness exercise is scheduled for Wednesday at the Akrotiri elementary school for students and teachers, aiming to educate them on how to respond to emergencies, such as siren activations. Two rooms will be used as a gathering point and temporary shelter, if necessary.
